Profile
John and Jean have been square dancing since the early 1990's in Richmond BC.
Music has always been a passion for John who took music lessons as early as 5 years old and when he left high school, he joined the Military to become a professional musician. After two years of professional training he graduated from the CF School of Music in Victoria and joined his professional band in Winnipeg where he played for 3 years. John left the band to attend the University of Manitoba and upon graduating went on to control air traffic in the military at many bases across Canada. Even though officially out of music, at every base John took charge of the base bands to keep in touch with his music. At one point, he joined a barbershop choir, took training to arrange music for barbershop quartets and became a quartet coach. An opening at Queen's University for a classical voice student became available and John auditioned and won the spot. A military posting a few weeks later to Comox prevented him from following a classical vocal career. After retiring from the Air Force John moved to Vancouver and continued his musical interests as the assistant director of music of the Legion #5 Band in Richmond BC and he and Jean started Square Dancing. In 2005, John and Jean attended callers' school studying under Lorne and Barb Smith. Since then, John has called when asked at club and special dances. John arranges and digitally records many of his square dance calls. During the past few years, John and Jean have been Vice President and then President couple of Calgary and District Square and Round Dancing Association and are currently Vice President couple of the Square and Round Dancer Instructors Association of Alberta.
